It's hard to believe that Father's Day is almost here.  For those of you who are at loss as to what to get your dad, or want to knit something but are running out of time, here's a little something for you.  Bow Ties Are Cool is a super quick and super cute gift.   The bookmark only takes around 15-20 yards of sock yarn and could easily be knit in an hour.  As an added bonus, knit it in Tardis blue, and it would also make a great gift for all your favorite Doctor Who fans, who know that bow ties really are cool!

Bow Ties Are Cool

Materials
Size US 3 knitting needles, double point and straight
Approx. 15-20 yards of sock yarn

Notes
  • Leave a 6" tail when casting on the bow tie, and leave a 12" tail when binding off.  The shorter tail will be used to sew the bow tie up, and the longer tail will be used to wrap the center of the tie and attach it to the icord.
  • The bow tie size can easily be changed by using a different cast on number or knitting more or less rows.  Experiment to see what size you like best.

Directions
Using double pointed needles, cast on 3 sts and work an icord until cord measures 12", or desired length.  Bind off and weave in ends.

Bow Tie (make 2)
Using straight needles, cast on 18 sts.  Leave tails as directed in the notes section.  Knit 10 rows (5 garter ridges).  Bind off.

Using the shorter tail, match the two short edges of the tie and sew together.  You will now have a small ring of knitting.  Flatten the piece so that the seam is in the center of the back.  Take the longer tail and wrap it firmly around the center of the piece as many times as desired to get the look you want.  Secure the the tail at the back of the tie, but do not cut, and then use the remaining length to attach it to the cord.  Spread out the ends of bow tie.  Enjoy!

    About Me

Why DistractedKnits? Well, I wanted my name to reflect my designing philosophy. When I knit, and design, I prefer patterns that are interesting to knit, but can be easily memorized. I also need patterns that can be put down at a moment’s notice, and when picked back up, it only takes a moment to find my place.

I love to knit, and I love to design. Curling up with a stitch pattern book, yarn and needles is what I call a good time!

I enjoy dyeing yarn with food safe colors, reading books about knitting, and trying new techniques. I also like to take sweaters apart and use the yarn for other projects.

When I’m not knitting, I’m mom to 9 children, ages 21 to 3. We are a Christian homeschool family, and raise chickens for eggs and meat. There’s always something going on around here--especially with 5 boys to keep things interesting! :-)

I also love Sherlock Holmes (in pretty much all his variations), Doctor Who, Charles Dickens, playing on my iPad Mini, and following politics.
